Westlake players in WP Teams

Hi everyone

Welcome to another busy week. The rains last week were very welcome. We had an impressive 105mm in the last 10 days with the June total being 159mm. Unfortunately Saturday afternoon was a complete washout as a result, but the rain is very welcome.

The Westlake Tuesday ladies competed for the Madge Sewell 5 Club Trophy yesterday in glorious golfing weather! This is an Individual Stableford Competition with only five clubs allowed in one’s bag – quite challenging! The winner of the trophy was Adi Campbell on 35 points.

Counted out into second place was Lynsay Minnaar, also on 35. Joan Bulgin and Pamela Mouries were close on their heels with 34 points respectively.

Adi used a 3 wood, 7 wood, 7 iron, pitching wedge and putter for her winning round

The 10K draw will be held this Friday evening the 12th July in the members bar. Westlake Kitchen will be serving fish and chips, steak egg and chips and chicken quesadillas (all served with salad), so come along and enjoy a good night out at the club.

Do you classify yourself as a quiz night wiz?

The Open Quiz Night is next Wednesday, the 17th July. The kitchen are offering a choice of pizzas or Mexican mince Nachos for those wanting to grab a bite to eat. The quiz for the US Open was great and we are looking forward to another festive Westlake evening. Bookings to enter teams can be made with Emelia.

Open Mixed Comp

The next Open Mixed will be on Sunday 4th August. As always, family and friends are welcome to enter and guests from other clubs too. Bookings are open and you can see all the details for the day here.

The meal looks fantastic! Piazza chicken plated-  grilled chicken topped with sautéed  bacon, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes and red wine glaze, served with baby potatoes and vegetables

Book at bookings@westlakegolfclub.co.za

Please show up for your tee time

There has been a gradual increase in no-shows. Members will book a 4-ball and only 3 or sometimes just 2 players will turn up and no-one cancels in time. Please remember that every space we lose in this way could be sold to a paying visitor. Nic Lochner is keeping a record of all no-shows and will watch for emerging patterns, so please cancel the day before if you are unable to play.

Remember that cancelling on the day is not possible online precisely for this reason. If there is a real problem on the day, please call the office to let us know. Thanks for your understanding in this regard. Let’s all work together to make sure we don’t waste any tee times.

This week, Western Province Golf proudly announced the team to represent the Union for the 2019 Interprovincial Tournament to take place at Nelspruit Golf Club from 15 – 20 September 2019. Our own Kyran Hawkins has made the team and we are all justifiably proud! The team will be managed by Westlake’s Robbie Larson.

The Western Province team for the 2019 Senior Kestrels Side was also announced yesterday. Westlake’s Jeremy Park was selected.

The Western Province team for the 2019 Challenge B Side includes our own Shaun Le Roux who was also selected as the team Captain. A great honour.

Finally, the team to represent Western Province for the 2019 Mid-Amateur B Side includes 2 Westlake members, Mark Coram and Glen Campbell

All these sides will play against Southern Cape at Kingswood Golf Estate from the 9th to the 11th of August 2019. Well done to all our members for achieving this honour and good luck to all.

 Weekly tips with EOGA

How to hit a flop shot

We have all found ourselves behind a small tree or behind a bunker to a tight flag.

Here’s a couple of pointers to pull off that flop shot:

• Open the club face
• Set up with ball position right in the front foot
• Lean your weight to the left
• Swing hard at the ball from the top

With the open club face, the ball will pop up in the air. Most importantly, for this scenario, you need to commit to the shot ; don’t hold back!

Come and try this shot at EOGA Westlake with Alec.
