The excitement at the Club is mounting with a huge week ahead! We’re celebrating big this Friday night with a brand new Toyota Yaris up for grabs, followed by the 2nd hosting of the Investec SA Ladies Open. It’s certainly enough to keep us all rather busy! This is a bumper edition, so let’s get started.
As alluded to above, FRIDAY is the BIG DAY! The Toyota Yaris Raffle Draw is happening on Friday evening, along with the R10K draw, great food on sale and a big party with music and dancing too. It will all happen downstairs. Join us and remember that if you don’t have a ticket, you can’t win a brand new facelifted Toyota Yaris. Tickets available at the Club and on the night. Tables will be unreserved, so things are nice and casual. Be here!
Westlake takes the trophy back
On Sunday, we once again hosted the annual Westlake vs Steenberg Challenge – a friendly game that used to be arranged by the Club Captains of the two clubs each year. This had been in the planning stages from last year, but finding a date that suited everyone was quite a challenge, so Martin Hill hosted an event that he reintroduced, despite being past his term as club captain. The weather was absolutely magnificent, the course equally so, and to top off a perfect day Westlake defeated Steenberg, retaining the trophy last won in 2004! The Steenberg players were hugely complimentary about the condition of our course.
Well done to the players.

Elton on a winning streak
Saturday also saw perfect weather. I just want to mention the memorable round of golf played by Elton James. He shot a 64 for best gross, not something you see every day. He narrowly missed shooting 29 on the first 9 and missed a putt on 18 for a 63! Fantastic golf. All the winners of the A, B and C Divisions in both fields played very well and the standard of golf was very high. It was a fine day for Medal Competition and thoroughly enjoyed by all.
A young golfer with a promising career
Young Westlake member, Kieran Urquhart, proved unstoppable this past weekend, winning the Western Province (U15) Interprovincial in Worcester. Well done Kieran. We are all very proud of you!
We’re readying our course for the Ladies Open
The Investec SA LadiesOpen starts on Monday next week. There will be no 9-holes this coming Sunday, the 10th March, due to preparations for the pre-qualifying round on Monday morning.
We ask all our members to please vacate the respective trolley bay rooms by Sunday, the 10th March. In addition, also rather remove your clubs and other items, required for golf from your lockers, if you are playing elsewhere during the week. The locker rooms will be used by the ladies. Thank you for your co-operation and assistance in this regard.
With regard to watching the golf, members are welcome at the Club all week and may watch the golf on all the days. Obviously the normal rules regarding a professional tournament are in place and spectators are expected to follow golf etiquette at all times. The only other request is that members do not enter the player’s area and take any food or drinks reserved for them.
Golf club rates
Some good news is that the Clovelly rate during the S.A. Open has been reduced to R250. A big word of thanks to them for this. (Subject to availability).
The other options are as follows:
Royal Cape – R280
Milnerton – R270
Metropolitan – R235, and R30 extra for competition days
Boschenmeer – R200
Parow –R170and R30 competition fee
Somerset West – R270
Stellenbosch – R235. Carts at member rates – R250
Steenberg – R400
Another sequel to the Telkom drama
The latest in the Telkom telephone saga is that the fault has finally been found. The line is so old that it is a lead-lined cable, which the technician described to me as being nearly a foot thick. This presents all sorts of challenges when making joins. The telephone lines were up and running as from 10:45 on Wednesday, but are still giving sporadic problems, so if you have difficulty reaching us still, use the 063 594 5531 number.
Thanks for your patience during this trying time! As a matter of interest, quotes are in for a brand new telephone system. The current contract which is dependent on old Telkom infrastructure, ends in a few months and we will be ready with a state-of-the-art system, which ironically will cost the Club less every month.
This one’s for you ladies!
The Saturday Morning Annual Ladies Sponsored Day takes place on the 30th of March. All 4-balls will include at least 1 lady, depending on the numbers.

Update on new rules
Just a small note on the new rules. If you decide to leave the flag in the hole when putting, please exercise caution when removing your ball. We have seen some damage to the sides and edges of some holes since this rule was introduced.
A final reminder to fill all divots and repair all pitch marks.
Last but not least
Let’s all have a brilliant week! See everyone at the party on Friday and then let’s put on a real show for the SA Open. Come out and support and remember this is a televised event on Supersport. It isn’t live, but the package will be televised and Westlake will be featured, so the more people we have lining the fairways and surrounding the greens, the better!
Best wishes David and the outstanding Westlake Team
