Hello everyone!

Like me, I am sure you are wondering where 2018 went! It started and now it’s over. The rest was like a blur… And yet we had an amazing year with many highlights.

This will be the final newsletter until the 2nd week of January, so there is quite a bit of information for you.

15 on 15 in 5

Let me start with Saturday, which was a very special day here at the club. As many of you will know, 4 crazy golfers embarked on a very special quest last Tuesday at Atlantic Beach. They played 3 golf courses every day for 5 consecutive days, hence the name “15 on 15 in 5”. The aim was to raise money for Choc which supports families of children suffering from Cancer. The final round was played at Westlake. It was a wonderful afternoon and our members came out in force to support this amazing initiative, raising an additional R5400 during prize-giving, plus the funds raised with the raffle and auction. I was extremely proud to be involved as were all those privileged to be here to witness this astonishing achievement. I have received a letter from Ken Walker, manager of the team and would like to share his words of gratitude with you all. He had the following to say:

“We were completely blown away by the reception we received on Saturday evening from Westlake staff and your members. We spoke about walking up the 270th hole during the week, but to have that many people follow us for the last 9 holes and then have the huge gallery standing on the 18th green was an experience that dreams were made of for the Team. It was great to be welcomed to Westlake in such a warm and happy manner. We would also like to thank you for arranging the pizzas and for playing the music on Saturday evening. The boys were playing Day 5 and we knew that adrenalin was going to carry us through to the 270th hole once we had got that far and it was a privilege to be able to walk up the 18th fairway at Westlake which must be the friendliest club in Cape Town. We cannot thank you all enough.”

Well done Westlake!

The Prentice Champs

The Prentice Champs were held last Thursday afternoon. Well done to Michael Willig (on right) for his victory and congratulations to player of the year Kieran Urquhart (on left), pictured with EOGA’s David Gerhardi.

Please support our final drive with this project!

The Driving Range

The Driving Range procedure has been tightened up, simply to have proper controls. You pay for your bucket of balls in the Pro Shop prior to going to the driving range, get your receipt and hand it in to the driving range attendant. The balls are available from the Driving range attendant during office hours, or the Pro Shop, should you want to make use of the facility before 08h00 or after 16h30. We will consider selling bulk packages in the new year to simplify this process for regular users of the driving range, but for now, kindly follow these procedures.

Water levy increase

Many of you will have heard Club Captain Martin Peter announcing at Prize Giving’s and Friday night draws about the City of Cape Town increasing the effluent water charge from R1,19 to R2,02 per kilolitre. This is the water we use to irrigate and the reason the golf course is in such superb condition. The water levy of R10 just about covered the R1,19 cost, but the Trustees had no option but to increase the water levy to R20 per round from January 1st to cover this additional expense and charging per round played is the fairest way to recuperate this cost. It is a small price to pay for such a stunning golf course!

Christmas draw

The Christmas Draw takes place this Friday evening at 18h30 in the upstairs bar with the whisky draw. The 100 places have all been taken but not everyone has paid yet. There are still 21 numbers unpaid. Please ensure you pay your R100 at the bar prior to the draw on Friday. Good luck to all.

Happy holidays!

Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to wish all our members and their families a blessed Christmas, festive New Year and a prosperous 2019. Travel safely if you are going away and come back refreshed and ready for a bumper 2019.
