Holidays are here

Hi everyone.

We have had a great week at Westlake once again.

Golf player by day, secret agent by night

This past Saturday we had the Saturday Classic Golf Day, and later that evening our Big Bash year-end party. We had a whopping 205 players in the 2 Competitions on the day, with everyone enjoying halfway on us and a great day’s golf. A big word of thanks to Lyall Morgan and Associates for sponsoring the day. Our winners were as follows:

AM Field:

1st – Jamie Lowndes, Brandan Chase, Christopher Lowndes & Tim Watkins-Baker 88pts

PM Field:

1st – Richard Perrow, Lloyd Nussey, Colin Harris & Graham Talbot 93pts

The actual Big Bash was an epic party in the best Westlake tradition. The décor for the Casino Royale theme really set the mood, the gaming tables with fake “Westlake” money were great fun and the food was superb! All the guests were dressed up in their best black tie attire and everyone danced and partied until late. A memorable evening!

Donations and stitches

Sunday was the Cancer Awareness Day sponsored by the Norris-Jones Family. The turnout on Sunday afternoon was impressive with 94 players. 3 potential fines should be mentioned here however. One goes to me for pulling my back out while moving a pot plant on Friday! A second goes to Emelia for partying so hard at the Big Bash that she got carpet burns on her knee and ankle! That put both of us out for golf on Sunday! Finally Dave Granger deserves a mention. Unlike the 2 of us, he made it for golf, but during a particularly graceful practice swing, he managed to whack Captain Martin Peter on the head, necessitating stitches! Injuries aside, a really enjoyable day was had by all.

A big word of thanks to the Norris-Jones family for putting this all together.

Don’t miss the game of the year

This coming Sunday is Hamper Day. It is an annual favourite with some special prizes arranged by Golf Director Nic. There are a few spots still open. It is a mixed competition and 4 Ball Alliance Stableford (2 scores), so only Westlake members may play and there must be 2 men and 2 ladies per 4-ball.

Call the office at 021 788 2020 to secure your spot.

Give a little and save a life

I realise this is a long way off, but Westlake will be hosting the South African Bone Marrow Registry Golf Day in May next year. They have sent us their current appeal to help save 4 young children in desperate need.

Have a look at the attachment and if you would like to get involved in this worthwhile cause, feel free to contact them directly at 062 163 2276.

Pitch. Repair. Repeat.

There has been a lot of discussion about how to repair pitch marks correctly. Have a look at this video for a perfect and easy demonstration:

Also a reminder to repair divots. Do not replace the grass, but put sand from your sandbag in each divot. The course gets progressively busier from now onwards and we need to ensure it stays pristine. Thanks to everyone in advance for your assistance with this.

Make it your new year’s resolution

Leagues start early in the New Year which is literally just around the corner. We begin with Mid-Amateur and Masters League, starting on the 26th January. If you would like to participate in either league in 2019, please put your name down on the lists in the foyer.

New rules of Golf

Coming into effect on 1 January, 2019

The process to modernise the rules began in 2012. The R&A and the USGA initiated this to ensure that the rules are easier to understand and apply. This has resulted in several important changes being made and there a now three publications to help players, as well as officials with interpretation and guidance in how the rules are applied.

For the first time, a Player’s Edition of the Rules of Golf is being introduced to provide a shorter, more user friendly version of the Rules for golfers at all levels of the sport. This Player’s Edition, for members, will be distributed to all Western Province Golf Clubs by WP Golf and we have just received ours. Pop in for your free copy any time.

If you would like to know more about the changes go to either of the Randa or USGA websites. They have a range of explanatory videos and all the new books available in digital form to enable you to learn about the 2019 rules.

Anyone interested in learning more about the game can attend free sessions in January. Read further if you want more information on 2019 Club rules of golf sessions and 2019 Junior rules or golf sessions.

Rounding the corner

A reminder to all Westlake Prentice members that our Prentice Champs are coming up on Thursday, 13th December. Please book directly with David Gerhardi at EOGA at Steenberg.

Take note

The Eoga attachment last week left one digit out of Alec’s cell number. They have rectified the error and you can contact him directly at the corrected number below.

Have a fantastic week!

David and the team
