Bookings for the Open Mixed on the 2nd June are now open. Members need to please call the office to book. Cost is R130 for members and R330 for visitors. The sponsor is Courier IT – a big thank you to Giovanni Contaldi & Henry Monk for their support! Friends and members of other clubs are most welcome!
The New Par 3 hole is being used quite extensively as we do ongoing maintenance on the other short holes. Many members use this area to practice their short game. Unfortunately the green and fairway are taking a real pounding, with pitch marks not being repaired correctly or at all and divots are largely being ignored. As such. the Greens Committee have made a decision to no longer allow approach shots from the new Par 3 fairway (as even the repaired divots are unsightly). There are a number of practice mats scattered around the fairway which must please be used for this purpose as an alternative to using the fairway. Kindly ensure that you fix all pitch marks and do so correctly, by pushing the pitch repairer from the back and outside of the pitch mark inwards, in order to help the grass knit when you pat it down. While on the subject of maintenance, the 10th hole will be closed on Monday 20th May to re-sod an area of the green that was damaged. Thereafter, the team will move to the 17th (21 – 24 May) and the new Par 3 will be in use for this all week.
On the subject of repairing divots, please remember the course preservation project where we have special blue sandbags and compost rich divot mix on 1 hole every week. Next week will be the 4th hole. The uptake has been very slow recently and your assistance would be appreciated. Take a bag, fill in any divots you see on the hole and replace the bag on the next tee box. Simple! Thanks everyone.
The Wags Boydie Yellow Ball Challenge was held on Tuesday. The winners were Tim Largier, Vince Davies, Ian Price and Ted Dowling. Well done gentlemen!
A special word of thanks to the Golf Ops team and especially member Jeff Sternslow, who has been hard at work ensuring the Saturday morning field is sponsored regularly. He has managed to find sponsors for the remainder of 2019. The remaining member days that have no sponsors will now be worked on. Well done!
Our next WP Ladies league fixture is the 28 May and Westlake are hosting Bronze Division Section 3.
On the gentlemen’s side, this weekend is the start of the Harry Solomon League. Our team is raring to go and Westlake faces the tricky prospect of Milnerton in round one on Saturday. Good luck gentlemen!
The teams for this week are as follows:
Home – Houtie Niewoudt (Captain), Pierie Le Roux, Glen Gibbons, Gunter Weimar, Stuart Gedrim, Geoff Tuck, Peter Hunt and Mark Gordon.
Other players in the squad not playing this week are Nelson Da Silva, Martin Peter and Kevin Clemo.
A reminder that the course is closed on Sunday the 23rd June for the Westlake Open. Gentlemen may enter through the Western Province Golf union. Reciprocity will be arranged at other clubs and will be in next week’s newsletter.
The bookings for the Festival events in November are also open now, so if you would like to book your games so long, give Emelia a call.
Our Golf Ops team and EOGA coach, Alec have been hard at work with our golf development programme. EOGA Westlake hosted the Muizenberg Junior school for some introduction to golf. Alec coached them and taught them the basics of golf. The future champions of tomorrow are among us!
Weekly tip from EOGA coach Alec
Do you want to get a couple of extra meters off the tee? Have you moved your ball position more forward? Do you have a slight tilt with your shoulders at set up?
For more information on how to hit bombs, contact me on firstname.lastname@example.org.
Please visit our website for more information about EOGA and the work we do.
That’s it for this week. Have a great weekend!
