Farewell Gavin.

Hello everyone,

Our Ladies bathrooms are looking beautiful!

Let’s start with the good news this week. The Ladies have been extremely patient while Nick Bold painstakingly created everything by hand from wood for their downstairs toilets. This is not only special, but is saving the club a fortune. It is finished and the end result is astonishing! I would never have believed it possible that two handcrafted basins could be constructed from pieces of wood, but the end product defies belief. Nick has done an amazing job and everything was done by him by hand – mirrors, basins, counter and support and light fitting. This was clearly a labour of love and his talent needs to be applauded.

Well done Nick!

In remembrance of Gavin Tinkler

On a tragic note, we lost a very special member this week. Gavin Tinkler passed away suddenly on Friday morning from a heart attack. He was only 62; and had played 9 holes and spent some time at the club on Thursday evening.

I had spent a great deal of time with him working on the Constitution and incorporating all the SGM and AGM resolutions of the past few years. We formed a firm friendship over the past 2 years and I found him to be a kind, relaxed, intelligent and caring man who had a great love for this club, his family, friends and fellow man. Nothing was ever too much trouble, even when he had work pressures and often he would pop in on a Sunday and spend hours with me working on all the intricacies of our Constitution.

He was a member for 31 years and will be greatly missed. Our condolences go out to Trisha, his children Nicholas and Jessica and his siblings David and Gillian. The funeral service will be at Christ Church, Constantia on the corner of Parrish Road and Constantia Main on Friday at 11h00. This will be followed by a get together at Westlake in the members bar from 12h45.

Festivities on Friday

Friday is also a very busy day at the club. One of our members has his daughter’s 21st upstairs on Friday evening, so the member’s draw will be Downstairs this week.

It’s almost time for the Westlake Foursomes!

Sunday is the annual Westlake Foursomes. It is played over 36 holes and features a shotgun start at 07h45. Good luck to all competitors. We have arranged reciprocity at a number of clubs for anyone looking for a game. They are as follows:

Durbanville – R227
Metropolitan (PM only) – R250
Royal Cape – R250
Kuils River – R185
Parow – R200
Clovelly – R250
Somerset West – R250

Prizegiving will be downstairs and there will be pizzas for all competitors.

Support our League Teams

Our men’s 1st league team is in action this weekend against King David Mowbray. The Super Seniors are playing Parow away. All the best gents.

Our ladies league sides are also playing next Tuesday. Westlake are hosting Bronze Division Section 2, with Somerset West taking on Erinvale and KD Mowbray against Westlake. Good luck ladies!

How to spend your Friday night

The next R10K draw is only 9 days away and will be on Friday 20th September. Once again, we have lined up some great live music, this time a two-piece acoustic band, The Tiltman Brothers, who concentrate on rock standards from the 50’s to present day.

The food will once again be of the build your own variety, as this works really well on such an evening. Build your own gourmet burgers with fresh chips are on offer and members pay R100 for the evening and non-members R120. Bring family and friends along for a great night out. Tables can be booked with Peter and Lindsay as usual.

Success at The Milnerton Open

The Milnerton Open was played on Sunday and the scores were outstanding. Weyers Janse van Rensburg and Pietie Loubser both finished on -3, which would usually be close to a winning score. This only netted them 6th place however. The other Westlake member under par was Elton James on -1. Kyron Hawkins was on level par and Shaun Le Roux on +1. Well played to all our members.

A friendly reminder

We have a number of members who have not yet paid their playing fees for the year and not made any arrangement with the club. Kindly inform us in writing of your intentions by close of business on Friday 13th September. Please note that we will always attempt to accommodate our members and confidentiality is assured, should you wish to pay this off in monthly payments. There is also a Debit order option. If any Life members are waiting for next week’s SGM, please just advise me in writing. I can be mailed directly in this regard at manager@westlakegolfclub.co.za.

There have been a number of instances where members forget their membership cards or wallets at home and then ask to buy at halfway on credit. Some of these accounts have not been paid and Westlake Kitchen are appealing to anyone who is in arrears to please pay their bills. Please note that if you do not have your membership card loaded with funds, you will no longer get your 20% discount in halfway house and will need to pay cash. Thanks for your assistance with this.

Looking for your next DIY project?

The Pro Shop renovation is going well. The old display units will not be re-used and there are a few available for sale. They are in very good condition and can easily be converted into very nice cupboards by adding doors.

If anyone is interested in purchasing these units, please contact me via e-mail at manager@westlakegolfclub.co.za. This will be strictly first come, first served.

Calling all cricket lovers

Westlake member, Greg Speechly, is raising funds for the Claremont Cricket Club and is having a Golf Day on the 18th September. It is at Rondebosch as Westlake was full, but will be here next year. Any cricket lovers who would like to support him can get all the details here.
