Big Functions coming up!

Hello everybody!

It is a beautiful clear autumn morning as I write this and everything is clean and fresh after the great rain we had earlier this week.

We have a lot of news for you this week so let’s get started.

Our Pro Shop update

The Pro Shop extension has been revisited by Westlake and Global Golf. It has been acknowledged by both parties that the original proposal makes no financial sense in the current market and the gains of a couple of metres of extra shop space are far outweighed by the restriction of the view from the downstairs bar and patio as well as the very high expense. Global Golf will develop the Pro Shop interior instead, ensuring the current shell is transformed into a world class store without any financial burden on Westlake at all.  Global Golf will spend a substantial amount of money to achieve this end and the interior of the shop will be completely transformed into a high-end store. The project will still happen this Winter with final planning underway.

Annual WP InterClub Competition

Ten Westlake ladies travelled to Hermanus on the 9th May to play in the annual WP Interclub competition which is held over three days. The theme for the tournament was “Fairway Fashion Through the Ages” and the Westlake ladies embraced it wholeheartedly and were awarded second prize for the best dressed!

Julie Clifton and Lyn Cochrane came fourth in the D Division (foursomes stableford). Jane Wollaston and Gail Thane were counted out in fourth in the B Division (foursomes stroke play)

Ladies Foursomes Cup

The winners of the Ladies Foursomes Cup on Tuesday 21st May were Brigitte Parker and Charlene Faint pictured with the lady President, Annamarie Usher.

Best wishes from everyone at the Club

We have been informed that our former Caddie Master Pietie Smith has taken ill and been diagnosed with Lung Cancer. He is at home in Kraaifontein. Carmen and Beth visited him this week and gave best wishes on behalf of everyone at the club. Some members sent him some gifts and he was extremely thankful. Any further information can be obtained from Carmen. We wish him everything of the best.

Welcome back and good luck!

You may have noticed a friendly, familiar face at reception lately. We are thrilled to welcome Carl Adams back into the Westlake fold. He has left Global Golf and the pro shop and brings a wealth of knowledge and skills back to the office. He will be ably assisting the team with bookings in addition to the other reception duties. We will be saying farewell to young starter Shane De Kock, who has applied for the position in the Pro Shop. We wish them both every success.

Thanks to our sponsors

Last week I mentioned new sponsors until the end of the year. Every single Saturday morning is now sponsored for 2019. Any open Wednesday and Saturday afternoons will now be tackled. Thanks to Jeff, Brendan and the golf ops team for the great work they are doing.

Save the dates!

2 BIG dates for your diaries this week!

14th June is the next R10K Draw. We are very pleased to announce that the talented and very popular local artist, Kai Connor will be performing LIVE at Westlake for the R10K draw. We have heard nothing but rave reviews about Kai and he sells out Jakes and Brass Bell when he plays there, so don’t miss this! There will be a superb Curry Buffet and it will be a night to remember. Bookings are open.

16th June is Father’s day and Westlake Kitchen are putting on a huge spread. Spoil the Dad in your life by coming to the club for lunch. Book for the whole family and enjoy. Bookings for this directly with Lindsay or Peter.

Mid-year special for you!

Some more great news which you can spread to all your family, friends and colleagues is that the Club is halving Venue Hire on all functions for functions during June and July! So, if you are celebrating a birthday or special occasion, or know someone that is, chat to us. There are some open dates available and where better to have an affordable party than at this stunning club?!

Update from the course

Drive Cart Garages

We have finally started work on the 10 new Drive Cart garages. You will see work on clearing the trees this week, followed by a TLB to remove stumps and then work can begin. All 10 are spoken for and we have revised the waiting list. Chat to Emelia if you would like a garage at some stage in the future – always a good idea to be on the list.

Harry Solomon League

Our Harry Solomon League team play Strand on Saturday. Good luck gents!

Please note

On the golf course side, the 1st hole will be closed on Monday to remove cynodon from the 1st green. The temporary hole will be in play for Monday only.

Weekly Tips with EOGA

Would you like to hit pure iron shots?

Make sure you get set over the ball – your ball position should be the same for all iron shots.

Swing wide to the top – keep your width in your back swing, and don’t let your arms collapse.

Go down and through it – start the downswing from the ground up, shifting the weight to the left.

Head down to EOGA Westlake to get help on striking your irons.
