Accolades for Westlake

It has been another busy week with plenty to look forward to. The rain continues to keep the course irrigated with nitrogen rich water and it is looking magnificent. We get multiple 5-Star Google reviews from visitors playing at our course every week and they also highlight the quality of our staff and service, which is great to know.

“A real test of golf. The course is in great condition at the moment”.

Date change | National Golf Day
1 December

Let’s start with an important change for this week. The National Golf Day scheduled for 1 September has been moved to 1 December, due to a new sponsor coming on board this week. They would like to grow the game of golf in South Africa, hence this decision. It makes no real difference to Sunday, so come and enjoy your game anyway. We can pit our golf skills against the greats on 1 December instead.

Irvin, Rutherford and Lefson Trophies | 26 August

On Monday, 26th August, eight Westlake Ladies competed in the Western Province Irvin, Rutherford and Lefson Trophies Event at Royal Cape Golf Club. The competition is divided into three divisions: 0 – 9.4 Handicap Index competing for the Irvin Trophy; 9.5 – 15.2 competing for the Rutherford Trophy and 15.3 and above competing for the Lefson trophy.

The competition format is Foursomes Matchplay, played off scratch. All teams played 18 holes in the morning. The top three teams then went through to the afternoon and played another 18 holes of Foursomes Matchplay – a lot of golf!

The Westlake Ladies Bronze team won the Lefson Trophy and the Westlake Ladies Silver team were second runners-up in the Rutherford Trophy competition. Pictured below are the victorious Bronze team, Isobel Firmin, Fiona Meijer, Charlene Faint and Tigist Habte Michael; and the second runner-up Silver team, Jane Wollaston, Gail Thane, Rene van Eck and Marilyn Franklin. Well done ladies. That is quite an achievement!

Babs Burl Trophy | 27 August

Another lovely day for those ladies who are grandmothers was the Babs Burls, the grandmother’s trophy on Tuesday. The winner was Morag Burrell – pictured here with Ursula SA Couto – Lady Captain.

The Royal Cape Open | 25 August

The Royal Cape Open was held on Sunday and our Westlake guys were once again seriously in the mix. After 36 holes of golf, our own Elton James was tied on 143, with rounds of 72 and 71 in first place. That meant a playoff was required to separate the 2 protagonists. Unfortunately for Elton he lost on the first playoff hole, but well done on an outstanding achievement!

Other notable Westlake results were Uli Boezaart’s 5th place on 147, Kyran Hawkins on 149 and Shaun le Roux on 152. Well done gents. (I foresee a red-hot club champs next year!)

Clovelly Open | 18 August

At the Clovelly Open on the 18th August, Pietie Loubser fared best of our members, coming home in 4th, just 3 shots off the pace, with Shaun le Roux finishing 7th.

Important notices

Just a reminder that due to the Corporate Cup this Thursday, there will be no 9 holes in the afternoon, due to activations after golf.

From the Golf Ops team

Some important bits of information from the Golf Ops team this week:

Grab and Go ends next week Wednesday, but please continue to keep your halfway stop quick so that we can keep the fields running smoothly on busy days. The days are getting longer, but we will still have to play ready golf and get everyone through halfway quickly to ensure all players finish their games.

I’m not sure how many of you are aware, but competition fees have remained static for well over 5 years now. The Golf Ops team have put the Comp fee up by just R6 from 1 September, in order to continue providing great prizes in all our member competitions.

As a matter of interest, competition fees pay for the prizes and closest to the pins and we pay Vat on the “income” too, so you can understand that just the price of the whisky and wine we use for nearest the pins has increased far more than R6 over the past year, let alone 5 years. We obviously work hard to find sponsors to assist with these costs and will continue to do so. If anyone is interested in sponsoring member competitions once a month, there are some great advantages, so chat to Nic Lochner on this matter.

Diary Update

Emelia is busy readying the diary for next year. If your telephone number has changed since last year, please let her know your new one, so that it is correct in the 2010 diary.

Pre-paid golf

A reminder that payment for your pre-paid golf must be paid by 1 September, so please ensure this reflects in our bank account by Monday 2nd. Remember, there are monthly payment options, so feel free to chat to Emelia or I if you would like to make use of this service.

Revamp underway!

You will remember a couple of weeks back, I showed initial progress on the revamp in the Ladies’ downstairs toilet. Work is virtually complete, with Nick Bold putting the final touches to the handmade wooden basins and mirrors as I write this. He has done an amazing job, free of charge, putting in many extra hours of hard work, for which we are extremely grateful. He did experience a few personal hiccups along the way, but has resolutely stuck to his task despite this. The final result will definitely be worth the wait and thanks for your patience.

The next revamp at the club starts on Monday. (Never a dull moment at Westlake!) The Pro Shop will be completely re-done which means finding a temporary area for checking in and buying all your necessities. Having considered all areas in the club, the only workable solution is the Main Reception. From Monday, please report to Reception to check in and pay your water levies, comp fees, trail fees etc. The Pro Shop staff will be stationed there for the next 4 -6 weeks and they will also have merchandise on display in the foyer daily. It is a small disruption, but the results will give us a Pro Shop to be proud of! Thanks for your understanding in this regard.

Have a great week and enjoy this fabulous club we all love!
