Firstly, as this is the first main newsletter of 2020, a very happy new year to you all. May this be a phenomenal year for our amazing club and everyone who works and plays here.
Sadly, Bugs Wilson passed away on Sunday after a battle with cancer. He was 86. He was a member of Westlake for 27 years and will be sorely missed. His gentle nature and ready smile were a regular feature at the club, especially on Sunday afternoons when he played with his beloved Eleanor. The wake is at the Club next Tuesday at 17h30.

This Sunday is Open Mixed. Remember that visitors of members are most welcome to join you, so encourage your friends to come and enjoy this wonderful club.

While on the subject, please note that normal Sunday afternoon competitions are open to everyone who qualifies to play on a Sunday. Members who have limited memberships are still permitted to join in too and simply pay the associated green fee. Nicci Steyn is the organiser of Sunday competitions for 2020, so feel free to chat to her and put your name down prior to the preceding Tuesday if you would like her to include you on the list. Members guests are always welcome but remember only members can win trophies on trophy days. Let’s all enjoy Sundays at the club.
As Nic explained last week, a reminder that placing is no longer allowed at Westlake. Click here for the official HNA document regarding preferred lies.
News from the course
In an effort to improve the playability of our bunkers, we will be testing a new type of bunker sand. At the moment we are testing this new sand at the bunker at the driving range and at the new par 3 green. Please make an effort to assist us with our trial by utilising these bunkers and by providing feedback to Raymond@westlakegolfclub.co.za
We look forward to your comments.
Regular cart users – Urgent message. Ladies and gents, if you are a regular cart user and don’t always book, as there are usually carts available, please note that as we are in peak season with lots of overseas visitors and members, carts are in high demand. Please book every time you would like a cart, to avoid missing out. We cannot keep carts aside in case you want one, as we have visitors prepared to pay visitors rates for carts. Many thanks.
A friendly request to all owners of golf carts to please park your carts facing the 2 cladded walls in front of the clubhouse. We have had a few instances where up to 5 carts were parked alongside each other facing the clubhouse and created a traffic jam. Many thanks!
On a few occasions in the past few weeks, driving range balls have been taken home and then used on the range the next day. Kindly note that no driving range balls may be removed from the premises/range. Loss of these balls is a considerable expense and we appeal for everyone’s help in ensuring that any losses are minimised.
As a matter of interest, we have hired out our extra hole to a film crew to shoot a television commercial next Monday. This will not impact on golf in any way. Please remember to shout “fore” if your approach on 8 is a little wayward to the left! This is a good, new source of income for the club.
Anyone who has old golf equipment that they would like to get rid of, is welcome to bring this to the club and give to Clint. Westlake is busy with an initiative to assist underprivileged golfers and all donations are most welcome. We will ensure your old clubs are put to really good use!
