Hi all,
I hope you all had a good week.
Just a reminder to all those still in the top 16 Matchplay for A & B Division and Top 8 in C Division that your next round is this coming Saturday. Good Luck to all those players playing.
We will be opening the top of section of the putting green this Saturday. We have organised a demo putter day from Yes Putters and we will also be doing a putting competition with some nice prizes up for grabs. The Demo will start at 10am and prizes will be awarded at Saturday evening prize giving.
The Timesheets for Festival Week will be coming out on Friday evening in the foyer at 17:30. The whole week’s timesheets will be coming out so be sure to be at the club to get your name down. And also just a reminder about the Car Raffle, we are selling quite a few tickets but need a big drive over the next 3 weeks to get these tickets all sold. We will be getting the car in the next week to have on display so please make an effort to sell your tickets and if you haven’t collected a book please do so in the office. You never know you may be driving off in a brand new car, or passing it on to your children.
I have contacted all the clubs in Cape Town for Reciprocity for Sunday the 20th as we are hosting the WP Closed, the following have come back to me with rates:
Clovelly – R180.00 Rondebosch – R150.00 Parow – R140.00 Milnerton – R175.00 Strand – R150.00 King David – R165.00 Durbanville – R115.00
For those “couples” that are looking to play in a mixed, Mowbray are having theirs on the 20th at a rate of R240.00 pp inclusive of Comp Fee.
These are the clubs that have gotten back to me, if we do get anymore; I will post a list up in the Pro Shop with the applicable rates.
We have entered a team into the “Super Senior” league which starts on Saturday. Congratulations to the following players who will be representing Westlake against Rondebosch this weekend, Keith Daly, Barrie Downes, Geoff Tuck and Mike Nevin. Good Luck gents and play well.
I am still having some queries on the handicapping system and the 2 and 3 over scoring. Please note that there is no option other than to take a 2 or 3 over. If you are a 0 – 18 handicap and make 18 double drops you must record 18 double drops on your scorecard and enter your score accordingly. If you are a 19 to 36 handicapper and make 18 Triple drops you must enter your score into the computer taking 18 3 over’s. If you do have any queries on this matter, please come and chat to me so I can clarify it for you.
Below is a Note from Raymond on Hollowtining and Upcoming Projects:
I’m sure all of you will agree that the greens have recovered remarkably well after hollow tining. If any of you are wondering what the reason for this is. It is basically good nutrition (fertilizer) and the time of year. Poa Annua simply loves spring and autumn and is biologically engineered to perform at its peak during these times. Bent grass however performs well under cooler conditions, but not as well as Poa Annua does. For that reason the greens at the 5, 9, 18 and putting green are slightly behind in their recovery.
My portion of the putting green I’m happy to say is looking great and will be opened for play this coming Saturday. Once opened, it will help the existing portion of the putting green recover quicker as it is currently being hammered by all the foot traffic.
We have also planted 22 new trees around the golf course. The trees we have chosen are all highly wind tolerant and will make great golf course trees in the future. The varieties we have chosen are as follows: Ficus Natalensis (Wild Fig), Buddleja Saligna (False Olive), Ficus Rubignosa (Australian Fig and Syzigium Guineense (Water pear). The plan going forward is to keep on planting new trees to areas that are either bare or where older trees have died. This practice will ensure good tree coverage for years to come.
In the next few weeks we will be going around the course catching up on some much needed tree maintenance i.e. Lifting of all lower hanging branches, cleaning shoots from stems and the removal of dead branches. We will also be continuing with our bunker irrigation project which involves the installation of new sprinklers around the bunkers. This is done to help keep the sand moist and firm and also to help strengthen the turf around the bunkers.
Birdie wishes, Raymond and Max
We may have had this poem before, but came across it again so thought I would share it with you.
Golf Poem In My Hand I Hold A Ball, White And Dimpled, And Rather Small. Oh, How Bland It Does Appear, This Harmless Looking Little Sphere. By Its Size I Could Not Guess The Awesome Strength It Does Possess. But Since I Fell Beneath Its Spell, I've Wandered Through The Fires Of Hell. My Life Has Not Been Quite The Same Since I Chose To Play This Stupid Game. It Rules My Mind For Hours On End; A Fortune It Has Made Me Spend. It Has Made Me Curse And Made Me Cry, And Hate Myself And Want To Die. It Promises Me A Thing Called Par, If I Hit It Straight And Far. To Master Such A Tiny Ball, Should Not Be Very Hard At All. But My Desires The Ball Refuses, And Does Exactly As It Chooses. It Hooks And Slices, Dribbles And Dies, And Disappears Before My Eyes. Often It Will Have A Whim, To Hit A Tree Or Take A Swim. With Miles Of Grass On Which To Land, It Finds A Tiny Patch Of Sand. Then Has Me Offering Up My Soul, If Only It Would Find The Hole. It's Made Me Whimper Like A Pup, And Swear That I Will Give It Up. And Take To Drink To Ease My Sorrow, But The Ball Knows ... I'll Be Back Tomorrow.
That’ all for me this week, Dave will be back next week and I will hand over the newsletter to him for a while again.
Have a good week.
Regards, Mark
