The Westlake draw was very well attended last Friday. I am sure that the incentive of some more money would have persuaded many of you to come and try your luck. The draw prize of R 3,720 was not claimed as the person drawn, Christine Kerr, was not present.

A few notes for those attending the draw on the Friday evening regarding dress code. Herewith an extract from the bye laws to familiarise yourself.

Members and visitors using the clubs facilities are asked to adhere to our dress code at all times.

The following dress is not permitted on the golf course:
• Jeans’ T-shirts; Slip-slops; Drawstring type shorts and tracksuits; Beachwear

Members Bar & Upstairs Lounge Area
Ladies and gentlemen shall at all times comply with smart casual standards of dress.

The dress regulations for the golf course apply with the following additional conditions:

• Neat, smart jeans may be worn; T-shirts may be worn by ladies only; Tailored shorts with appropriate socks are permitted until 18h00;Golf shoes are strictly prohibited at all times.

The weather has been hot and without much wind until late in the week, the course has suffered in the heat. As a result, and as is also normal for this time of year the poa annua grass on the fairway does go brown and we have a number of dark patches which appear dead. During the week the Greens staff have verti drained the fairway to remove compaction and promote the growth of kikuyu. The kikuyu grass is a much hardier grass which thrives in the heat of summer.

While on the topic of grass, it is noticeable that members and / or our visitors are filling divots by replacing the grass that they have removed and covering this with sand. The correct Westlake practice is to fill the divot with sand only. Please stick to this practice and educate those that you play with.

On the golfing front we had a mixed bag of results in the leagues over the weekend.

The third challenge side had a good win against Royal Cape, beating them 6-2 and bouncing back very well from an opening day defeat at the hands of Clovelly.

Our premier league team played against Rondebosch and Bellville on Sunday in the sweltering heat and at Milnerton. We neat Rondebosch 7 ½ - 4 ½ , but were soundly beaten 11-1 by the defending champions, Bellville. The score line belies the fact that 6 of the 12 matches went down to the last hole. I am sure the guys will bounce back strongly in their 4 way match on Sunday at Rondebosch. Our opponents in this ridiculous format are Royal Cape, Milnerton and Strand.

Our Mid Amateur team is back in action after a bye last week, and will play a very strong Milnerton A side, and the third challenge team face Somerset West. Both matches are home and away fixtures. Good luck to these teams.

The club Matchplay second round is scheduled for Saturday 25th February. Mark will book the matches for the players still left in the draw unless you have made an arrangement to play the match at an earlier time. If this is the case please let Mark know.

The Coronation bowl was played on Sunday. The Coronation Bowl trophy was donated to the club by the then mayor of Cape Town to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. The winners were husband and wife team of Paul and Dale Matthews.

Right, I am off on leave for a week starting on Saturday morning, so you won’t have to put up with my rambling next week.

Paul and Dale Matthews

I hope to share some really great news with you on my return.

Until next week, Swing Well.

Regards,
Dave
