Greetings from Westlake GC Thursday, 18 February 2010

To all prentice members please remember that there is a prentice competition on this Sunday with tee off times starting at 11:00. This is the first one for the year and we look forward to having a big turn out.

Our Premier League and Mid Am teams played their first games for the season in hope of bringing some silverware back to the club this year.

The Mid Am format has changed slightly this year which includes a betterball matchplay game as well. They played against Parow and proved too strong for their opponents and beat them 8 – 4.

The big highlight of the weekend was our Premier League team. They played against defending champions Bellville as well as Parow on Sunday at King David. After the morning foursomes they were 3 – 1 up against Parow and a 2 -2 against Bellville. The afternoon singles started off a bit shaky but the boys came back and dominated both their opponents in the singles. The Final scores were 9 – 3 win against Parow and 7.5 – 4.5 win against Bellville. This puts the team on top of the Premier league log.

Congratulations to Duncan Hammond and Jennifer Johnstone who won the Coronation Bowl last week Sunday on a score 0f 67. They were counted in into first place from Clive and Hilary Holmes who also had a score of 67.

Congratulations to Ron Clark and Bruce Maxwell who won the Chapel corner day on Saturday with a betterball stableford score of 44.
MM
Congratulations to Dick Davidson for winning the Wags 09/10 Eclectic. Maureen Giddey donated a trophy in memory of her late husband, Tony Giddey for the eclectic.

Please note that we will be having our annual Fathers and Sons Trophy next week Sunday afternoon. The bookings sheet will come out on Friday evening the 19th at 17:30 in the foyer.

The Old Mutual International Pairs comp is being played this coming Saturday. There is a compulsory comp fee of R50.00 and you could play your way to a trip to Scotland. We had 2 members make it to the National Final last year which was played at San Lameer. Steve Behrens and Ian price unfortunately did not make it to the international finals but flew the Westlake flag high.

WESTLAKE MEMBER PLANS AUGUSTA ATTACK
If you think you might have seen what looks like a Masters green jacket in the vicinity of the Westlake clubhouse of late, rest assured you didn't imagine it. The guy with the green jacket is a single-minded new Westlake member who is plotting to play at the Masters in the next few years. But first he needs to get down to single figures! A big ask, you might say, but Richard Asher does have a plan...follow his Westlake-based quest online at www.mygreenjacket.com. Alternatively email him on rasher05@gmail.com or call 021 712 5556 for more details or for a free email subscription. He's flying the flag for Westlake so do spread the word!

A man watching Golf on TV kept switching channels to a dirty movie featuring a lusty couple.
"I don't know whether to watch them or the match," he said to his wife.

"For heaven's sake, watch them," his wife said.

"You already know how to play Golf!"

Have a lovely weekend,
Mark, Wouter & Beth

YOUR PROSHOP

Just a reminder about the Woodworm/Ernie Els shirts that are on sale for R299.00. We had to get a picture of Andy and Mike in here with their “manly” pink shirt which we are also selling in the shop.

The sizes are running out so if you have not bought yourself one yet be sure to pop into the shop as soon as possible.

TIP OF THE WEEK
GRIP DOWN THE CLUB FOR BETTER FEEL

A way to improve your feel and achieve greater clubhead control and awareness is by gripping down the grip of the club. The closer your hands are to the club head the better touch you have and also helps with accuracy.

Until next week,
Nic and the Team

TEE TO GREEN

I am pleased to say that the greens are recovering very well from the disease that was present last week. A follow up application of fungicide will also be done this week to ensure that the disease does not re-infest our greens.

To all dog the lovers in the club you will all be happy to know that our goose dog Max will start work this coming Monday. His first week at work will be very busy. I will be working very closely with him and his current handlers to make sure that I can manage him properly. Once I have sufficient control I will start introducing him to all interested members of our club. He is truly a fantastic animal who is very hyper active and always happy, ideal for chasing geese!

We have also started re-constructing the ladies tee box on the 4th hole. There after we will also re-do the ladies tee box on the 7thhole. Once we have completed these ladies tee boxes we will also redo the upper men’s tee box on the 3rd hole as well as the men’s tee box on the 1st.

This week we have also reduced our height of cut around the fairways and greens. This was done mainly due to the excessive growth that we are experiencing in these areas.

Other than that it will be business as usual out on the golf course.

1 PROBLEM, 3 SOLUTIONS: THE HOOK
If the thought of a tight, tree-lined dogleg to the right leaves you feeling nervous, or – even worse - you consider using an old ball whenever you notice a water hazard down the left side of the fairway then you have a problem; an untamed hook...

It’s a terrible affliction (that some 25% of you who took part in last year’s equipment survey admitted to suffering from) and is caused by an ‘inside-out’ shape swing plane combining with a closed clubface at impact. Both conditions impart right-to-left spin on the ball and –when combined - they produce the ‘duck’ or ‘snap’ hook. One big problem, three simple solutions:

Constantly playing approach shots from the rough is no fun but hook spin doesn’t stop hurting your game there. In the ‘scoring zone’ hook spin will cost you shots as your ability to hit a high, soft landing shot is negated and that ‘bounce & check’ that leaves you with a tap-in becomes ‘bounce & roll’ that runs through the green.

Click on one of the icons on the right if you would like to either book a lesson, book an equipment assessment or browse my online golf ball catalogue. Not sure where to start? Tell me your problems and I'll point you in the right direction.

LET'S TALK ABOUT COMPRESSION
A golf ball’s core is its engine; designed to take the impact of a golf club and translate that into distance-driving energy. The ‘rule of thumb’ states that a softer core (with less compression) needs less swing speed to generate distance, while a harder core (or higher compression) needs a higher swing speed to do the same.

Now some golfers are willing to give a little of that distance away, because they know that the same launch conditions that optimise distance with the Driver (high launch with low spin) don’t provide the conditions that they need in the ‘scoring zone’ around the green. Here, the ball needs to launch with more spin to maintain control, and this means adding more, harder layers.

In the ‘scoring zone’ a golf ball’s compression is matched in importance by its cover. The material, softness and thickness all combine to determine the amount of spin you generate, so we’ll be talking more about this factor in more detail next week.

In the meantime, I suggest you find out whether you’re ‘activating’ the potential offered by your golf ball, and the best way to do that is to get an idea for your swing speed. Once we've identified that range we can begin to find you a ball that offers a comfortable balance between straight distance off the tee and control around the greens; all at a price point of your liking.
