Greetings from Westlake GC Thursday, 11 February 2010

Well it’s nearing that time of year again and we are starting to prepare for the Club Championships. The sheets for the Champs will be coming out on Friday 12th of Feb at 17:30 in the foyer. The dates for the Champs are 20th & 21st, 27 & 28th of March.

We would like to thank Ron Clark and Smith & Santos for again agreeing to sponsor the event this year. This will be the 10th year that Smith and Santos are sponsoring the event and we look forward to hosting another wonderful club champs with their support.

This past Saturday afternoon we played for the Zoutendyk Cup and Maidens Stakes Trophy.

Congratulations to David Wilson who won the
Zoutendyk Cup on a wonderful score of 67.

Congratulations to Alan Ranft who won the
Maidens Stake Trophy on a good score of 68.

There are still some spaces left for the 5 Day Club Champs which are being played on Saturday 27th of Feb and Saturday 6th March.

Please note that Chapel Corner will be sponsoring this coming Saturday afternoon and we have changed the comp in the afternoon to a Better ball Stableford.

Please be aware that we are in process of upgrading the website and you may have some difficulties accessing the members section as well as the competition results. We do apologise for this but we should be up and running in no time.

Marvin was a 14-handicapper, but one day he walked up to his club pro, a scratch golfer, and challenged him to a match. He proposed they put up R100 each on the outcome.

"But," Marvin said to the pro, "since you're so much better than me, you have to give me two 'gotchas'."
"A 'gotcha'?" the golf pro asked, "what's that?"
"Don't worry," Marvin replied, "I'll use one of my 'gotchas' on the first tee and you'll understand."
The golf pro figured that whatever 'gotchas' were, giving up only two of them was no big deal - especially if one had to be used on the first tee. So he agreed to the bet, and the pro and Marvin headed to the first tee to start their match.
Around four hours later, club members were amazed to see the pro handing Marvin R100. The pro had lost to Marvin!
The club members waited for the pro to enter the clubhouse, then asked him what happened.
"Well," the pro said, "I took the club back on the first tee, and as I started my downswing, Marvin knelt behind me, reached up between my legs and grabbed my crotch, and yelled 'Gotcha!' "
The club pro just shook his head. "Have you ever tried to play 18 holes waiting for the second?

Have a lovely weekend,
Mark, Wouter & Beth

YOUR PROSHOP

TIP OF THE WEEK
NEVER RUSH YOURSELF
Never rush your pre shot routine. Hurrying your preparation leads to a quick jerky stroke. Stay relaxed and calm at all times. This will help to maintain a smooth rhythm and tempo from the moment you start visualizing your shot, through the pre shot routine and to making the stroke yourself. If you feel tension creeping into your grip, lift the club off the ground and jiggle it. If something bothers you stand back and start over.

Until next week,
Nic and the Team

TEE TO GREEN

I have once again realized that a greenkeeper’s life is certainly filled with interesting challenges! In the middle of last week I noticed some disease symptoms on the 2nd and 16th green that looked very typical of Anthracnose. This disease occurs mostly in the middle of summer when the plant is under serious heat stress.

Since we have spotted the disease we have spent the last week and a half treating our greens with the recommended fungicide treatments. We have also sent soil and tissue samples away to a laboratory for accurate identification.

To make matters even more fun. We have also had an outbreak of lawn caterpillar, black maize beetle and aphodius beetle which we have already taken care of. Below I have included a photo of a lawn caterpillar which could also cause damage to your home lawn.

Please take note that the greens will be a little on the wet and slow side for the next two weeks. The reason for this is that most of the chemicals applied required heavy watering after application.

We have also raised the mowing heights on the greens mowers just to help speed up the recovery process.

Other than that it will be business as usual out on the golf course.

BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE
It doesn’t matter how skilled you are, a golf course will inevitably combine with Mother Nature to get the better of you, leaving you “Between a Rock and a Hard Place” with some serious decisions to make.

Do you take your punishment (in which case you need to know the rules), accept a little risk for a little reward and play a “50/50” shot, or succumb to the voices in your head telling you that you can pull-off the unlikely? Here’s one of those situations...

If you are going to take a risk then you need to be confident. That’s why you should always know the basics, know your limits and – in most cases – have a ‘go to’ shot that you can rely on. If you’re armoury is lacking this backup shot then it’s definitely going to cost you.

Don’t follow one mistake with another, don't let the moment and the company influence your decision-making (I'll bet we all still remember Jean Van Der Velde at the 1999 Open Championship!) and don’t let any of those valuable shots leak away. Click here, or on the image on the right to book a lesson with me and I’ll show you a few ‘tricks of the trade’ which you can use to get yourself out of trouble.
