Marvin was a 14-handicapper, but one day he walked up to his club pro, a scratch golfer, and challenged him to a match. He proposed they put up R100 each on the outcome.
"But," Marvin said to the pro, "since you're so much better than me, you have to give me two 'gotchas'."
"A 'gotcha'?" the golf pro asked, "what's that?"
"Don't worry," Marvin replied, "I'll use one of my 'gotchas' on the first tee and you'll understand."
The golf pro figured that whatever 'gotchas' were, giving up only two of them was no big deal - especially if one had to be used on the first tee. So he agreed to the bet, and the pro and Marvin headed to the first tee to start their match.
Around four hours later, club members were amazed to see the pro handing Marvin R100. The pro had lost to Marvin!
The club members waited for the pro to enter the clubhouse, then asked him what happened.
"Well," the pro said, "I took the club back on the first tee, and as I started my downswing, Marvin knelt behind me, reached up between my legs and grabbed my crotch, and yelled 'Gotcha!' "
The club pro just shook his head. "Have you ever tried to play 18 holes waiting for the second?
Have a lovely weekend,

TIP OF THE WEEK
NEVER RUSH YOURSELF
Never rush your pre shot routine. Hurrying your preparation leads to a quick jerky stroke. Stay relaxed and calm at all times. This will help to maintain a smooth rhythm and tempo from the moment you start visualizing your shot, through the pre shot routine and to making the stroke yourself. If you feel tension creeping into your grip, lift the club off the ground and jiggle it. If something bothers you stand back and start over.
Until next week,
Nic and the Team
TEE TO GREEN
I have once again realized that a greenkeeper’s life is certainly filled with interesting challenges! In the middle of last week I noticed some disease symptoms on the 2nd and 16th green that looked very typical of Anthracnose. This disease occurs mostly in the middle of summer when the plant is under serious heat stress.
Since we have spotted the disease we have spent the last week and a half treating our greens with the recommended fungicide treatments. We have also sent soil and tissue samples away to a laboratory for accurate identification.
To make matters even more fun. We have also had an outbreak of lawn caterpillar, black maize beetle and aphodius beetle which we have already taken care of. Below I have included a photo of a lawn caterpillar which could also cause damage to your home lawn. |
 |
Please take note that the greens will be a little on the wet and slow side for the next two weeks. The reason for this is that most of the chemicals applied required heavy watering after application.
We have also raised the mowing heights on the greens mowers just to help speed up the recovery process.
Other than that it will be business as usual out on the golf course.
